Built in 1870 as a circuit bungalow for British Government Agents, the Old Polonnaruwa Rest House and once the Queen of England's holiday destination in the 1950's, has been restored and now named as TheLake House Polonnaruwa. The Lake House overlooks the panoramic Sea of Parakrama and offers a magnificent view of the historic centre of Polonnaruwa's UNESCO World Heritage site, of Kingdoms past. The Lake House Polonnaruwa restored to a charming deluxe boutique hotel reflects Sri Lanka's distinguished heritage. It is an intimate 14 roomed hotel in a welcoming environment evoking a beautiful harmonious living space. The open living concept, a chic Café for your short eats and favorite cool or hot drink, and the 40 seating capacity Restaurant overlooking the lakefront which serves the ever famous “Rice and Curry” Luncheon that was once the most popular, a 9 seater bar with a unique mix of modern living amidst local traditional flair, gleaming marble floors, hardwood floored deck areas with restful colour selections, modern day requirements, yet classic furnishing, all these merge to create a memorable ‘home away from home' experience.
The landmark is the Queen's Suite which is the best of the Deluxe rooms with a private terrace, outdoor Jacuzzi and shower facing the huge Sea of Parakrama; one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.
Reproductions of old photographs, throughout the hotel, commemorate the visit of Her Britannic Majesty in 1954 on her Commonwealth Tour to what was then Ceylon.
